How AK Science Olympiad Works Preparation Each team member will prepare for 3-4 events throughout the year. You should expect to spend a lot of time at home building, memorizing, researching, studying, and/or practicing, depending on what event you're preparing for. You'll also be preparing with another person since each event must be done with two people. Communication and collaboration are key to success! Your partner will either be someone you tried out with or someone that you are paired with based on the events you've tried out for. There is a spot on the test for a partner, but this won't be considered unless you have similar scores. Typically, the Regional and State competitions will have different requirements (States is harder), so if you are on the Varsity team, be prepared to study extra hard for States.
Science Olympiad is very self-guided. You'll have to look online for resources, textbooks, practice tests, wiki pages, etc. to help you prepare, and take accountability for your own success. Our recommendation is to use the website scioly.org, and read about your event topics.
Meetings AKSO meets mainly to have progress checks in preparations, go over updates (e.g. ICC volunteer hours, finalized dates, payments, etc.). These meetings are not meant for preparation, although closer to the competitions, we'll have a couple sessions where you can come to practice at school. Once teams are decided, attending meetings is mandatory, we have to know how you're progressing and ensure you aren't falling behind. Regionals is early this year, so if you've done it before we have a shorter timeline this year.
Competitions The regional competition for Division C (high school) takes place in Charlotte in February. The state competition is at NC State University in April. Everyone is required to go to regionals, and all Varsity team members are required to attend States.
